On the occasion of the erection of a monument to commemorate the assassination of four land rights activists from the Southern Peasant Federation by gunmen in Klong Sai Pattana Village, Chaiburi District, Surathani Province in Thailand, Focus on the Global South would like to express its solidarity with the Southern Peasant Federation of Thailand (SPFT).
“Today marks 170 days since Uncle Chai Bunthonglek left us; he is the fourth land rights activist to be killed, just because he wanted to protect their land and defend their rights.
"Although we not related by blood, we are connected in the spirit of peace and justice. These activists have ignited a light in the darkness of injustice and fear. It is not easy and takes courage to confront injustice and brutal oppression.
"The departure of their souls has shaken the whole of society and posed an important question to the current political and economic system that has placed power, satisfaction and interests of the capitalists before the rights, lives and livelihoods of the poor.
"The truth is that the power of the oppressed - those who are seen as powerless and vulnerable - is mighty, and has always shaken the status quo of the oppressors. Violence and fear are often resorted to maintain an unjust structure and suppress and frighten the resistors. They are wrong; the violence may have taken lives but the spirit can never be killed. Instead, it inspires more to grow and embrace the journey towards a search for justice, which serves as a foundation for us to continue the struggles.”

เนื่องในโอกาสเปิดอนุสาวรีย์เพื่อรำลึกถึงการจากไปของนักต่อสู้สิทธิที่ดินสี่ท่านที่ถูกลอบสังหารจากมือปืน ในชุมชนคลองไทรพัฒนา อำเภอชัยบุรี จังหวัดสุราษฏร์ธานี โฟกัส ออน เดอะ โกลบอล เซาท์ ขอถือโอกาสส่งสารแห่งความสามัคคีแก่สหพันธ์เกษตรกรภาคใต้
“วันนี้นับเป็นวันที่ 170 ของการจากไปของลุงใช่ บุญทองเล็ก ซึ่งเป็นนักต่อสู้คนที่สี่ ที่ถูกลอบสังหาร จากความต้องการที่จะแค่ปกป้องที่ดินและสิทธิของตนเท่านั้น
เขาและเธอ หาใช่ญาติธรรมทางสายเลือด หากแต่เป็นญาติธรรมผู้ซึ่งชี้ทางสว่างในม่านหมอกแห่งอธรรมและความกลัว ในการสกัดกั้นจิตวิญญาณแห่งเสรีภาพและความเป็นธรรม มิใช่เรื่องง่ายและต้องใช้ความกล้าหาญอย่างยิ่งยวดในการเผชิญหน้ากับอธรรมและการกดขี่
การจากไปของท่านทั้งสี่ ได้สร้างแรงสั่นสะเทือนต่อสังคมโดยรวม และได้ตั้งคำถามใหญ่ต่อระบบการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจในปัจจุบันที่เอาสิทธิ ความพึงพอใจและผลประโยชน์ของกลุ่มทุน อยู่เหนือ สิทธิ ชีวิตและความเป็นอยู่ของคนจน
พลังของผู้ที่ถูกมองว่าอ่อนแอ แท้จริงเป็นพลังอันยิ่งใหญ่ที่สั่นคลอนโครงสร้างและการกดขี่ของผู้มีอิทธิพล ความรุนแรงจึงถูกนำมาใช้ ด้วยคิดว่าจะรักษาความอธรรมอันเหลื่อมล้ำได้ ซึ่งมิได้เป็นเช่นนั้นเลย การสูญเสียแม้พรากชีวิตบริสุทธิ์ แต่จิตวิญญาณการต่อสู้เพื่อความเป็นธรรม มิสามารถถูกจองจำและพรากจากไปได้ กลับแพร่ขยายเป็นรากฐานอันแข็งแกร่งแก่ผู้คน แนวร่วมแห่งมวลชนผู้ใฝ่หาความถูกต้องได้สานต่อเจตนารมณ์นี้ต่อไป”
